Youth Leadership Camp!

Group of youth residents outside Boys and Girls Club of Lake Eufaula sign

Our youth had an amazing time at the SERC-NAHRO Youth Leadership Camp in Eufaula, Alabama! They started with engaging presentations from the Alabama Conservation of Law Enforcement, where they learned the difference between alligators and crocodiles and even held baby gators. Vicky Smith from A-Z Animals introduced them to Alabama's 16 bat species, and they got hands-on with a snake, a blue-tongue lizard, a turtle, and hissing cockroaches. They also enjoyed a lively BBQ at Old Creek Town Park, complete with line dancing and stunning views of Lake Eufaula.

The adventure continued with a visit to the 135-acre Historic Landmark Park in Dothan, AL, where they explored the natural and cultural heritage of Alabama's wiregrass region, toured an old farmhouse and an antique-filled grocery store, and walked the nature trails. They attended a reptile presentation featuring snakes and turtles, and a fascinating tractor presentation from Headland, where they learned about the evolution of tractors and even got to sit inside one. They also enjoyed a DNA presentation from the Hudson Alpha Institute, where they learned about DNA in all living things, including food, and extracted DNA from a strawberry to take home. The campers enjoyed an afternoon at Water World Water Park, swimming and sliding, and wrapped up their exciting week with a special closing dinner at the Eufaula Chamber of Commerce, where certificates were distributed to all attendees.
